I’ve been in education for more than two decades. I spent my first years as a teacher and 15 more as an assistant principal and principal in K-8 schools. I have a doctorate in education with a specialty in inclusion—which in an educational context means making sure children with special needs have the
tools and support they need to succeed in a mainstream classroom.
I’m also a mom of three wonderful children, two boys and one girl. One of my sons is on the autism spectrum and my daughter is legally blind. Therefore, getting kids the help they need has been both a personal and a professional journey for me.
Your child is entitled to a free and appropriate education, and I believe that it shouldn’t be something that’s difficult to achieve. I’ve been on both sides of the IEP & 504 equation—as both a parent and an administrator. That perspective is unique and I hope to share it so we can all do better at serving our nation’s kids.
I consider myself to be a patient agent of change in my students’ lives. There’s nothing quite like the moment when a child first begins to blossom.
